Know the four big themes
AP Statistics content falls into four broad areas, and knowing roughly how they are weighted helps you spend study time well. Exploring data covers describing distributions, summary statistics, and graphs. Sampling and experimentation covers how data is collected — sampling methods, experimental design, bias, and why randomization matters. Probability and distributions covers probability rules, random variables, and the normal and sampling distributions. Statistical inference — confidence intervals and significance tests — is the largest and most heavily tested area.
Inference deserves the most attention because it appears throughout the free-response section and ties the other themes together. But it rests on the earlier ones: you cannot interpret a test without understanding sampling distributions, and you cannot trust a conclusion without understanding how the data was collected.

Understand the exam structure
The exam has two sections of roughly equal weight: multiple choice and free response. The multiple-choice section rewards broad coverage and quick reading of scenarios, graphs, and computer output. The free-response section is where scores separate — it includes several shorter questions plus one longer investigative task that asks you to combine skills and reason through an unfamiliar situation.
Both sections lean heavily on interpreting rather than memorizing. Expect to read regression output, compare distributions from graphs, design or critique a study, and carry out and explain an inference procedure. There is no penalty for wrong multiple-choice answers, so answer every one.

Write free-response answers that score
The single biggest source of lost points is answering without context. Graders use a rubric, and inference questions in particular expect a recognizable structure: state the hypotheses or parameter, name the procedure and check its conditions, compute the statistic, and then state a conclusion in the context of the problem. Skipping the conditions or writing 'reject H0' without translating it back into the scenario leaves points on the table even when the math is right.
Always write conclusions in plain language tied to the real situation, reference the significance level or confidence level, and justify choices. When a question asks you to explain or interpret, write sentences, not just numbers. Practicing full, in-context responses — and scoring them honestly — is the fastest way to raise a free-response score.

Avoid calculator-speak and common traps
The calculator is a tool, not an explanation. Writing only a calculator command or a naked list of numbers does not earn credit — graders want to see that you understand what the procedure is doing. Report which test you used and why, show the key values, and interpret the result. Similarly, define your symbols and parameters rather than leaving the grader to guess what a variable means.
Watch the recurring content traps: confusing a population parameter with a sample statistic, mixing up the conditions for different procedures, treating a confidence interval as a probability statement about a fixed parameter, and forgetting that observational data does not support causal claims. Each of these is a predictable place to lose points, and each is fixable with focused review.
